Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour for extra softness
  • 1 cup warm milk 110°F / 43°C
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter softened, plus extra for brushing
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • ¼ cup warm water for activating yeast
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds or poppy seeds

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a small bowl. Let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.
Make the Dough: In a large bowl, mix activated yeast, warm milk, softened butter, egg, salt, and 3 1/2 cups flour until sticky. Knead on a floured surface 8–10 minutes, adding remaining flour gradually.
First Rise: Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1.5 hours until doubled.
Shape Rolls: Punch down dough, divide into 12–16 portions, shape into smooth balls, and place in greased pan or parchment-lined sheet.
Second Rise: Cover rolls and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy.
Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Optionally brush with melted butter. Bake 18–22 minutes until lightly golden. Brush again with butter after baking.
Serve: Let cool slightly and enjoy warm.
